There are two primary factors, longer life spans and aging baby boomers, which combine to double the population of Americans aged 65 years or older during the next 25 years to about 72 million. It is known that physiologic changes as we age can cause a decline in strength, bone mass, activity tolerance, body compensation, balance and flexibility. As Physical Therapists, we have a role to understand how to evaluate these changes objectively and prescribe individualized treatment toward fitness and avoid frailty. In addition to individualized treatment focused on physical impairments, we have a role as health care professionals to educate on wellness and provide a holistic model to the movement system.
