Serious injury or illness can result in crisis that promotes maladaptive coping and traps the patient in a chronic pain, disuse, and atrophy cycle. Coping drives engagement in purposeful activity, so rehabilitation providers should help the patient to quickly return to normal function in work, play, and leisure. Normal function includes the occupational role, regardless of whether that role is worker, athlete, homemaker, or student. Occupational role is vital to optimum health. This course will focus on obstacles that can complicate recovery of occupational role after a work injury, and how to overcome them.
