Credit Description:

Serious injury or illness can result in crisis that promotes maladaptive coping and traps the patient in a chronic pain, disuse, and atrophy cycle. Coping drives engagement in purposeful activity, so rehabilitation providers should consider not only the physical injury, but how the patient is dealing with it. After the functional evaluation that has set Long Term Functional Goals has been performed, the PT/OT should engage the patient in a functional treatment program. The program should be collaborative, job-specific, and challenging. Weekly Short Term Goals should set expectations and guild progress up to the ultimate Long Term Goal of return to work.
