Humans have difficulty performing 2 distinct tasks at the same time, even when they are very simple. Dual task demands are becoming increasingly prevalent in modern life, but the cost of dual-task performance is robust. Generally, decrements are observed in both tasks. Historically, dual-task training has involved cognitive tasks combined with simple upper extremity motor tasks or walking. These combinations do not accurately reflect the nature of dual-task demands in daily life. This webinar will review components of dual-task training, and present an argument in support of a paradigm-shift in our approach to dual-task training to more accurately reflect the real-world demands faced by rehabilitation patients.
