Knee osteoarthritis (OA) affects many people and may or may not result in surgical intervention to restore function and decrease pain. Physical therapists play an important role in restoring function for these patients with nonsurgical and postoperative interventions. The goals for physical therapy intervention are mostly the same preoperative and postoperative: to decrease pain and improve function. Knee OA will continue to be prevalent in our society so it is important for the physical therapist to understand the etiology, diagnostic procedure, and treatment to manage these patients effectively. This course will describe the anatomy and function of the knee and explain how osteoarthritis impacts the mechanics of the joint. Additionally, this course will present diagnostic procedures and discuss interventions used by physical therapists who work with patients suffering from knee OA.
