Exercise is safe for people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and is necessary to combat the secondary deconditioning resulting from MS-related weakness and fatigue. There are five sections of this course, each with a different aim. The first section looks at the self-efficacy, physical activity, and quality of life in people with MS in a questionnaire-based study with 109 participants. This study primarily looks at patients with relapsing remitting MS, but a small percentage with primary or secondary progressive MS as well. The second section describes the importance of physical fitness in those with MS, and the association of physical inactivity with physiological deconditioning and the consequences of worsening of symptoms over time, as well as brain structure and function outcomes associated with fitness level. The third section defines exercise recommendations for patients with MS with an emphasis on therapeutic exercise and task specific strength training. The fourth section looks at a research article with nine subjects and the health and function improvements seen after participation in a community-based exercise program over the course of six months. The fifth and final section regards a longitudinal study with patients with relapsing-remitting MS investigating the different benefits associated with Pilates, stretching, and the use of resistance band training with twenty- two subjects over sixteen weeks of training. The reading materials for this course include articles from the Journal of Neurology and Neurophysiology, Novel Physiotherapies, Journal of Gerontology and Geriatric Research, and the International Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
