Designing a program of interventions for patients with spinal cord injury requires an understanding of the functional outcomes for each level of injury. However, many other aspects of this type of diagnosis must be considered to provide a comprehensive intervention including 1) common complications of patients with SCI, 2) shoulder pain causes and interventions for prevention, 3) seating and positioning, 4) strategies for optimal movement for different level injuries, and 5) exercise prescription. This course involves using multiple videos of actual patients to review interventions that will optimize the independence of patients with a variety of levels of injury. There will be extensive use of videos for analysis, case studies, and small group discussions for intervention design as well as lab time for facilitating functional transitions including bed mobility and all types of transfers.
