Recent innovations in gait correcting knee bracing technology have demonstrated the ability to strengthen the Osteoarthritic leg leading to the delay of the progression of knee OA. Similar designed devices are also available to prehabilitate the OA leg prior to TKA, accelerate recovery from knee injury or surgery, reverse post-surgical knee flexion contractures, and effectively treat Hemiplegic Gait. The focus of this Continuing Education presentation is to review clinical research on leg strengthening orthotic therapy that delays the progression of knee OA, reduces OA symptoms unbraced, and increases functional capabilities after 90 days of brace use. This leg strengthening orthotic therapy also has been clinically shown to provide significant prehabilitation clinical benefits when used several weeks prior to a Total Knee Replacement surgery, to accelerate recovery from knee injury / surgery, and to treat Hemiplegic Gait. Case studies will be provided to illustrate the patient benefits from this innovative approach to rehabilitative knee bracing.
