Physical Therapists will benefit from this course as the use of orthotic devices are common in today’s advancing medical field. One of the most common types of orthoses are spinal orthoses. These orthoses can be off-the-shelf, Custom Fitted, or Custom-Made devices which can be used to treat a range of pathologies. Understanding the differences in intervention based on the pathology can impact the biomechanics, healing, and rehabilitation of the patient. By understanding the key concepts of spinal orthotics, Physical Therapists can facilitate the use of orthotics to improve patient outcomes. Physical therapists will gain a unique perspective of the medical textile technology and compressive fabric in order to analyze the differences and indications for each type of spinal orthoses including Off the Shelf and Custom Fitted LSOs and TLSOs. Physical Therapists will be able to determine the decision-making process for identifying the correct LSO or TLSO for a patient based off evaluation. By understanding key clinical indications/contraindications, materials and pathology, the Physical Therapist will be able to determine appropriate application and intervention related to spinal orthotics leading to improvements in patients function and rehabilitation.
