We learn pain from the bottom up in school. Our interview and examination skills are focused often on a tissue-centered way of looking at pain. If there is one thing our improving understanding of pain has given us over the years, it’s the fact that bringing the patient’s story into your reasoning and care is crucial. No one teaches us to deal well with the human side of pain. What questions do you ask? How do you deal with emotions in the room? How do you position yourself as the guide and not the “fixer” to give patients control over their management strategies? How do you learn what the patient’s beliefs are and then what the heck do you do with them in practice? This workshop will answer these questions are more.
