A stroke is a time sensitive medical emergency that could be devastating for a patient. Stroke is the #1 leading cause of mild to severe disability in the world. Our job as health care professionals dealing with stroke is to get the patient the quickest, high-quality care possible to save lives and prevent disability. This introductory course will follow the journey of a stroke patient from field (prehospital) through the ED process, into the inpatient stay, to the discharge process and on to post discharge challenges. We will introduce and discuss the different types of strokes and stroke mimics. We will explore different stroke syndromes including the signs and symptoms of each and their correlating interventions. By following the process of the patient, we will focus on the prehospital assessments and handoffs to the emergency department, discuss the importance of timing and assessments for the best treatments for stroke. This will include acute strokes, LVO (large vessel occlusions), tPA treatments and transfers for thrombectomies. We will review ED/inpatient treatments, procedures and medications for the acute stroke process. Because stroke care is a multidisciplinary approach, we will discuss physical/occupational/speech therapies important for rehabilitation. Lastly, we will address post discharge expectations, common follow up treatments and FAQs regarding all parts of the stroke patient journey.
