The purpose of the webinar is really to respond to the emerging needs of long-term care organizations to be able to provide sensitive and respectful services to LGBT residents. There are over 3 million older adults who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender in the U.S. For many, LGBT older adults, the thought of moving into a long‐term care community invokes fear of mistreatment and anxiety about poor quality care and discrimination. In many cases, these older adults “go back into the closet” and do not identify as LGBT in order to obtain the care they need. This training describes the required elements for responding to the emerging needs of long-term care communities to provide sensitive and respectful services to LGBT elders. The training reviews definitions related to sexual orientation and gender identity, challenges experienced by LGBT older adults, and strategies for communication and policies that honor residents’ rights.
