Successful experiences in the U.S. Military and National Park Service have led to an increased role for physical therapists to provide care in non-traditional wilderness environments. This 1-day outdoor course will use realistic scenarios that integrate PT skills for the assessment and treatment of injuries and illness that are commonly encountered in the backcountry. Emphasis will be placed on strategies to support patients and rescue personnel when there is a need for extended onsite emergency care time. Presenters will provide case study examples based upon their experiences providing back country patient care in different capacities including as deployed military PTs, National Park Service volunteers, wildland fire fighters and as members of civilian search and rescue teams. Participants will be encouraged to develop innovative evaluation and treatment approaches within the context of wilderness medicine guidelines. .8 CEUs will be awarded upon completion of this course.
