Sitting is not a position of stability for the human body, so when an individual must utilize a wheelchair for their primary means of mobility, it is imperative that the evaluating clinician thoroughly assess the individual’s unique positioning needs. The key to determining the individual’s positioning needs is a thorough mat evaluation. The mat evaluation provides the evaluating clinician, and other members of the evaluating team, with the objective data necessary to make the most appropriate equipment recommendations to accomplish the established goals. This course will guide members of the evaluating team through the hands-on mat assessment process and provide intervention strategies to promote optimal positioning, thus improving safety and function for the end-user.
