The state survey guidelines state that the resident has the right to be free from any physical or chemical restraints imposed for the purposes of discipline or convenience and not required to treat the resident’s medical symptoms. Reducing facility restrains is a challenge for all healthcare providers. Often, referrals are made to therapy to assess the resident’s function in conjunction with restraint reduction measures. This session will review updated regulations related to physical and chemical restraints in long-term care. Topics such as resident assessment, therapy interventions, application and removal competency, safety guidelines, and alternatives to restraints will be discussed.
