Informed consent is not only an ethical aspect of patient care but a requirement of patient care in Arizona. However, in practice, how is it used to ensure patients are afforded both autonomy and shared decision-making in their medical care? As practitioners, we may rest in knowing that the patient signed an agreement in their intake forms or we may document that the patient was agreeable to treatment today. However, how do we know that the patient is understanding what they are agreeing to? Is it possible to build informed consent into our dialogue with the patient as we progress through their treatment? This course will briefly review informed consent as a regulatory requirement and begin to consider the discussion as a dynamic partnership in the patient’s care. Coding is an important part of what physical therapists do and can set the tone for a patient’s treatment as well as a therapist’s reimbursement. Having a good understanding of the billing rules and how to properly code various treatments is a responsibility therapists hold not only for their patients well being, but also for the future of physical therapy. It is important to have an understanding of all CPT codes and how to justify use of each of them in your documentation. This course will review the rules set by Medicare and the American Medical Association as well as the CPT codes available to physical therapists.
