This course is an introductory course designed to cover the fundamental skills of dry needling and its utilization in clinical practice for Physical Therapists. It will discuss the history of dry needling, and is not an acupuncture course. Safety and proper handling of needles and blood borne pathogens associated with the dry needling will be used and emphasized throughout the entirety of the course. Each participant will be expected to sign a waiver and practice dry needling on a lab partner that is also taking the course. This course is offered to licensed healthcare professionals and students enrolled in associated programs for entry-level practice. This course is designed to cover Dry Needling as a manual therapy for upper extremity, lower extremity, abdominal/anterior pelvis, lumbopelvic, and cervicothoracic regions. This course will review relevant anatomy related to the use of dry needling as a manual therapy. This course will cover the use of Dry Needling techniques in relation to trigger points/myofascial pain syndromes and its use in treating musculoskeletal injuries and/or disorders. Needle insertion, needle palpation, and treatment application will also be covered in this course. Participants will be required to complete a quiz following the introductory information regarding safety, adverse effects and safe handling which will be graded on a pass/fail grading system. Participants in this course will also be required to complete a skills check at the end of the course demonstrating competency and safe use of the material learned throughout the course, also graded on a pass/fail grading system. Participants in this course will gain an introductory knowledge about the implication and utilization of dry needling in a physical therapy setting. Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to demonstrate competency in the practice of dry needling and its use throughout the body in treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and disorders. Participants will also demonstrate safe handling skills and understand that they will utilize throughout their time spent practicing dry needling in a clinical setting. Subjects covered in this course include the following: History and controversy of dry needling as a treatment Safety, contraindications, and adverse effects of dry needling Needle insertion/palpation techniques Upper extremity needle insertion techniques and implications Lower extremity needle insertion techniques and implications Abdominal/anterior hip needle insertion techniques and implications Lumbar needle insertion techniques and implications Anterior and posterior craniocervical needle insertion techniques and implications Clinical applications of dry needling practice
