Physical therapists often manage cervicogenic headaches (CGH). The International Headache Society (IHS) describes CGH as a secondary type of headache emanating from the cervical spine which may be referred to one or more regions of the head and/or face. Although the pathoanatomical diagnosis of CGH may be challenging, the IHS recommends using diagnostic nerve blocks to confirm CGH. The most common screening tool used by physical therapists for CGH is the cervical flexion-rotation test. However, this clinical test may not be helpful in distinguishing headaches which emanate from spinal levels other than C1-2. Using specific craniocervical exercises combined with manual therapy has been advocated for treatment and Pu et al (2023) found that using the patient's response to repeated end range movements may indicate a directional preference which can guide intervention. This 2-hour session will provide a basic understanding of MDT principles of assessment, classification, and management of CGH. Case based analyses will inform the participants of the application of directional preference principles in managing this condition.
