Credit Description:

Patients who have suffered a concussive or whiplash event often complain of neck pain, dizziness, and headaches, often in complex combinations with overlapping signs and symptoms. These patients often carry a diagnosis of concussion or neck pain, which distracts from underlying cervicogenic dizziness, cervicogenic headaches, migraine headaches, and migrainous vertigo. Determining the appropriate treatment strategy is difficult because the source of the symptoms can be elusive or overlooked. Furthermore, the expertise to manage these patients often falls into different areas of specialty practice (typically neurologic and orthopedic PT), leading to patients needing to see multiple practitioners and thus inefficiencies of care. The purpose of this 2-day course is to familiarize the participant with best practices for managing traumatic onset neck pain, dizziness, and headaches, including strategies for differentiating the likely sources of the symptoms, performing appropriate examination procedures, and developing and executing an evidence-based intervention plan that includes manual therapy and exercise. The course uses cases of concussion, whiplash, and migraines to illustrate applicable evaluation and intervention approaches. The participant will be able to differentiate between patients with cervical musculoskeletal impairments and vestibulo-oculomotor dysfunction, discuss treatment of those who are appropriate, and refer those who are not. Participants will gain an understanding of the current recommendations in these domains, and an appreciation for where the literature is lacking and clinical experience must take precedence.
