Community mobility, specifically driving, is a normal activity of life for the majority of adults. Continued driving for older adults is critical for self-esteem, independence and self-worth. Because safe driving is a complex task incorporating visual-perceptual, sensory, motor and cognitive skills, many older adults who show gradual declines in these areas find themselves unsafe and therefore no longer able to drive. This course will provide therapists with tools and resources to establish a driver safety program, evaluate function as it relates to driving, provide education to residents and families, and suggest alternative transportation options.
