This course will enable attendees to have a better understanding of how managing edema in the orthopedic patient population can enhance outcomes. Attendees will have a better understanding of the role of the lymphatic system during acute inflammation and edema, and why excessive edema can be a detriment to short and long-term outcomes. Attendees will gain insight into current research regarding the effects of supporting the lymphatic system through multiple interventions on management of orthopedic conditions, especially total knee arthroplasty. Included is an overview of lymphedema treatment components including manual lymphatic drainage, compression, and the use of pneumatic compression devices used in the home to effectively manage edema.
