Hours/CEUs: 11 hours, 1.1 CEUs Prerequisite: None Who Attends: Physical Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants & Student PTs Event Description Join us for the November 2024 Head and Neck symposium hosted by PRN in partnership with the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. The topics presented will include physical therapy management of patients with traumatic brain injuries and concussion, and introduction to fundamental anatomy, arthrokinematics, and pathomechanical conditions common to the Temporomandibular joints. Considerations of subcranial region pathology and treatments will also be highlighted. Presenter Credentials / Bio Caprice Quinones, PT, DPT "Crack the Code: TBI and Concussion Management in Physical Therapy" Concussions, a form of mild traumatic brain injury, can affect individuals of all ages and have become a significant public health concern due to their prevalence and potential severity (Patricios et al., 2023). This class offers a comprehensive overview of risk factors, clinical presentation, assessment, diagnosis, and the latest evidence-based practices for managing post-concussion and traumatic brain injury. Participants will engage in an interactive escape room case study activity, where participants will solve puzzles and overcome challenges related to real-world scenarios of traumatic brain injury and concussion management. Learning Objectives At the completion of the seminar, the participant should be able to: • Review risk factors, clinical presentation, assessment, and diagnosis of traumatic brain injuries and concussions • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology and biomechanics of traumatic brain injuries and concussions • Develop the skills to effectively assess and create a plan of care for individuals post a traumatic brain injury and persistent symptoms of concussion • Apply knowledge of concussion and traumatic brain injury management to solve real-world scenarios in an interactive escape room simulation Dr. Caprice Quinones, an assistant professor at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences, has extensive experience in neurological rehabilitation, specializing in traumatic brain injury, concussion management, vestibular rehabilitation, and stroke rehabilitation. She previously served as the Manager of Clinical Rehabilitation and the Brain Injury and Behavior Management Program Director at an inpatient neurological hospital in South Florida. With a range of certifications and an APTA Board-Certified Neurologic Clinical Specialist designation, Dr. Quinones excels in treating individuals with neurological diseases through her private practice, PTRunners. Her current scholarship at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences focuses on concussion management and awareness in the public school system in South Florida. Mark Strickland, PT, OCS, MTC, Cert MDT, CFC, CCTT, CODN "Cranio Facial: Considerations to the Head, Neck and Face" The learner will be introduced to fundamental anatomy, arthrokinematics, and pathomechanical conditions common to the Temporomandibular joints. Further, assessment considerations unique to the head, neck and face will be discussed; including the most common exacerbating parafunctional behaviors as well as essential concepts in treatment design and practice. Learning Objectives At the completion of the seminar, the participant should be able to: • Discuss the unique concepts and considerations of the craniomandibular complex • Define the scope of evaluation and treatment for this very complex area • Perform the three fundamental, but vital, mobilizations for the Temporomandibular joints Mr. Strickland is a graduate from the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston in 1984. He received his McKenzie certification in 1994, completed his Board Certification in Orthopedic Specialty in 1999, his Manual Therapy Certification through the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in 1999, and his Craniofacial Certification in 2005 also through the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. In 2009, he was certified by the Physical Therapy Board of Cervical & Craniofacial Therapeutics (PTBCCT) as a Certified Cervical and Temporomandibular Therapist. In 2012, he completed his Vestibular Certification through the American Institute of Balance and Certification in Orofacial Dry Needling through Myopain Seminars. Mark practices physical therapy in Austin, TX with primary specialties of spine, manual therapy, and Craniomandibular Disorders, including pre and post- surgical TMJ cases, total joint replacements, arthroplasty, condylotomy, and arthroscopy with or without plication, orthognathic surgery, and grafts. He routinely sees patients with congenital or developmental deformities such as Melnick Needles Syndrome, Cerebrocostomandibular Syndrome, Hemifacial Microsomia, neuropathies, post complete or partial facial reconstruction, traumatic head and facial injuries and disorders of myogenous origin. Michael Irwin, PT, DPT, MHSc, MTC, FAAOMPT "Upper Cervical Complex" This segment will highlight considerations of subcranial region pathology-How does it present and how do we treat it? Essential anatomy and biomechanics and how they dictate arthrokinematics will be discussed. Key assessment tools will be demonstrated and practiced. Learning Objectives At the completion of the seminar, the participant should be able to: • Describe general cervical ROM • Describe regional motion dysfunction • Identify unique subcranial anatomy and function • Discuss Upper cervical problem presentation including, history, complaint, visual, palpation- CPM and treatment-specific
