Effective communication is critical to accurate assessment, appropriate treatment, and patient education; and impacts clinicians’ ability to build rapport and provide person-centered care. However, many patients experience changes or differences in communication that require accommodation from their provider. In the field of rehabilitation, clinicians are trained to address patients’ physical needs, but few receive training on how to accommodate communication needs. This course will provide clinicians with evidence-based hands-on training in the who, what, when, and how of providing communication accommodations, insights into the lived experiences of people with communication disabilities, and opportunities to analyze and improve the communication environments where they practice.
