A Mentor can be more than an experienced person who promotes the career growth of a novice professional. Mentoring has been shown to reduce turnover and increase retention of therapy professionals. Implementing an effective mentoring program can be a factor in improving the stability of a workforce. This presentation will review the history of mentoring and successful methods of establishing and maintaining a mentor program. Creating a culture of support for both the mentor and mentee along with outlining the roles and responsibilities of each member of the partnership will be emphasized. Through effective mentorship, we can positively impact healthcare organizations; improve job satisfaction; and promote professional development and empowerment in therapy students, new graduates, staff therapists, educators, and therapy leaders. Most importantly, mentoring can result in improved care, high-quality healthcare, and improved patient outcomes. Mentors provide new practitioners opportunities to develop critical thinking, bridge the gap between theory and practice, enhance productivity and enhance the sense of professionalism. Mentorship is an important concept for healthcare professionals as they work to navigate the profession and learn the needed skills for success in their role. Whether a novice or a seasoned professional, mentoring can be part of positive change within an organization.
