Athletes, weekend warriors, and everyday consumers have redefined the expectations about aging. It is no longer just about living longer, it’s about living “better.” With longevity of population, a new senior consumer in healthcare has appeared. Today’s consumer is not the adult child looking for placement for mom or dad. Today’s consumer is an aging adult, typically 65 or older, who is increasingly taking a more active, technology-enabled role in managing their health and wellness. The active aging industry has undergone significant change in a short amount of time due in part to drastic increases in the aging population and their overall changing views on fitness and wellness. This evolving consumer profile drives demand for personalized, convenient, and integrated healthcare solutions, including telehealth, smart home devices, and direct-to-consumer (DTC) health services, all aimed at supporting them to age in place with dignity and independence. What does this mean for therapists working in senior living communities? How can we partner with seniors to deliver a model of care that meets their needs? This session will begin by reviewing the 9 principles of active aging giving examples of how these can be incorporated into all facets of senior living. The session further defines and describes technology innovations therapists can explore as new service lines or use to enhance existing service lines. Evidence-based research and results of key focus groups will be presented to support the discussion. Participants will have the opportunity to share their best practices to identify those factors that, along with therapy services, create the senior living community of today (and tomorrow).
