Credit Description:

Grief is a normal response to loss and is gut-wrenching no matter where a person resides. Grief can happen in response to loss of life, as well as to drastic changes to daily routines and ways of life that usually bring us comfort and a feeling of stability. How we address grief is individualized, but common grief reactions include shock, disbelief, or denial; anxiety; distress; anger; periods of sadness; loss of sleep; and loss of appetite. Grief is messy and a natural response to loss. There are no right or wrong ways to experience it. There are, of course, commonalities, but our response to loss is different for every person. There is nothing predictable about grief. There is no to tell someone, 'This is what will happen, or this is how you should respond when it does.' This session reviews complicated and uncomplicated grief and the idea of trauma as this relates to grief. The session further reviews healing milestones and attitudes that can derail healing. Finally, practical strategies for the “general practitioner,” who is not a grief counselor, to address grief and death with residents and families in the course of rehabilitative therapy are reviewed with the goal of promoting resilience. The session will conclude with a case study that incorporates the topics discussed in the session.
